Lightning

the race wasn't starting for an hour
the rain poured down like I've never seen
people gathered round and started shouting
and the whole damn place was on its feet

one breath breaking at a time into steam
rain on his back and a little mud under his feet

let's start a long run
lightning's out ahead of everyone
nothing holdin' no one back
he's the first one out and he don't look back

right out the gate it seemed like somethin' broke down
sliding through the mud and into place
and although he pulled ahead, he seemed to slow down
the damage down was written on his face
